Live, killed or dressed: which chicken to send home

Akokor · 31 October 2026

In Ghana, buying chicken comes with a question: live, or ready for the pot? Here is what each option means on Akokor, and why it changes where the bird can go.

The four ways a bird can arrive

When you choose a bird, you also choose how the farm prepares it:

  • Live: the bird arrives alive, the way many families prefer it.
  • Killed: slaughtered by the farm, then delivered.
  • Dressed: killed, plucked and cleaned, ready to cook.
  • Cut: dressed and cut into parts.

Why distance matters

Live birds and eggs can go to any area the farm covers. Killed, dressed or cut birds only go to areas in the farm’s own city, so the meat arrives fresh. If your relative lives in Tamale, you’ll see dressed chicken from Tamale farms, and live birds from any farm whose riders reach Tamale.

Farms that sell dressed meat must show a valid veterinary or FDA certificate before Akokor lets them list it.

Which should you choose?

Choose live if your family likes to prepare the bird themselves, or the nearest farms are in another city. Choose dressed or cut if your relative is older, busy, or simply wants it ready for the pot. Live birds come with a guaranteed minimum weight, so you know what you’re sending.
